NCPA Supports Team-Based Care in North Carolina: Gallagher v. Rao-Patel and Ingram

A lawsuit, Gallagher v. Rao-Patel and Ingram, filed recently, challenges North Carolina’s physician collaboration requirements and seeks to prevent the North Carolina Medical Board and North Carolina Board of Nursing from enforcing those requirements against nationally certified nurse practitioners. NCPA is joining the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) and other specialty and physician organizations in a coordinated response supporting team-based care and the role of physician collaboration in patient care.

NCPA has long opposed expanding independent practice authority for nurse practitioners in North Carolina and supports meaningful physician collaboration as an important component of safe, high-quality patient care. We recognize the important roles that physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care professionals play in caring for North Carolinians, and believe strong collaboration among health care professionals is essential to safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.

As part of this effort, NCMS has launched a petition asking physicians and PAs across North Carolina to stand together in support of team-based care, meaningful physician collaboration and supervision, patient safety and quality, and the General Assembly’s role in establishing standards governing medical practice.

Medicaid Changes: NCDHHS “Know What’s Next” Toolkit

Changes are coming to NC Medicaid, including new work and community engagement requirements for some adults. NCDHHS has created a Know What’s Next toolkit with ready-to-use flyers, social media posts, rack cards, and wallet cards to help Medicaid recipients understand the changes and take steps to protect their coverage.

NCPA members and other community organizations are encouraged to download and share these resources with patients and communities.
